The answer is that many become “self-employed consultant solicitors” – aka freelancers. In a market awash with lawyers fighting for scraps of work from hard-up clients, it can be a tough gig, with conditions at some of the firms which have embraced the consultant model apparently not so great.
Indeed, as you can see from the Legal Week Jobs ad below, at one life is so bad that it has been impossible for the management to come up with a single reason why working for them would be desirable on any level.
