A second year law student at UCL has won Herbert Smith Freehills’ ‘Above and Beyond’ vlogging competition — and will be heading on an all-expenses paid trip down under that will take in visits to two of the global firm’s offices in Australia.

Caoimhe Creed’s video about how she goes above and beyond by mentoring and teaching in her free time — which was set to hit OMI track ‘Cheerleader’ — saw her emerge from over 1,300 applicants to win a place in the final at Herbert Smith Freehills’ London headquarters earlier this week.

There, she excelled while giving a 10-minute presentation to several of the firm’s senior members — including graduate recruitment partners Mark Bardell and Veronica Roberts — to scoop first prize in the competition that has been the talk of the nation’s law faculties.

Caoimhe’s minute-long clip can be viewed below, alongside those of the other five finalists (which have been embedded in no particular order).

Caoimhe Creed, UCL

Georgia Graham, Exeter University

Hamza Khayoun, BPP University

Nadia Shanahan, University of Law

Lucy Brown, Hull University

Olivia McGonigle, Birmingham University

Legal Cheek Careers caught up with Caoimhe after she was crowned winner, and she told us a bit about her competition experience:

The video took me about a day to do,” she said, “I had no video editing experience previously but was able to make it using iMovie on my Mac. During the final itself we were required to do a presentation on how we would promote Herbert Smith Freehills while in Australia and what we would do by way of preparation for this. I talked about the various channels that I would use — such as Australian university law societies and a friend’s radio show.

Caoimhe added that she hopes to be heading out to Sydney in July.
